WHY DO PATIENTS RECOVER?

During the1980s Courtney Harding Ph.D. did a study of what happened to patients released from Vermont State hospital between 1955 and 1960. These were all diagnosed with Schizophrenia and were the hopeless cases from the backwards. 30 years on she found 70% had recovered and were no longer on medication, she repeated this with Augusta State Hospital in Maine and found 50% had recovered and were no longer on medication. The common factor she found in recovery was removal from State Hospital, the patient found a safe place to live and someone they trusted cared about them.

Starting in the 1950s Dr Hoffer claimed success using vitamin b3 treating schizophrenic patients. No one was able to duplicate his success. My review of his case studies showed that in addition to prescribing vitamins he was taking detailed histories from the patients and also helping them with their problems. Was his success due to treating a vitamin deficiency causing Schizophrenia, or a deficiency caused by the illness, or because he was listening to his patients and helping them with their problems, or some combination?

For years patients with Scurvy were treated with citrus fruit although no one knew about vitamin C. So why can’t the psychiatric profession focus on making people better rather than on what is wrong with them. Research is important but should not impede treatment.

Still a fascinating article. Personally, I prefer an existentialist approach however my personal philosophy is that while no one has a monopoly of the truth I will always listen I have found nuggets of wisdom in the most eurprising of places.

There is an article on ABC News that helps explain why people couldn't keep better. I worked in that hospital briefly some years ago, it was still primitive.

Thanks. I think you missed my point. If you know why people recover then you can help them and extrapolate regarding what was wrong with them in the first place. I had a brief psychotic episode and worked in an old Asylum in London England so I have seen the bio- pharama -industrial complex from both sides. Check out my article in Mad in the Uk web site this Friday. Rethinking Schizophrenia -- an Existential view you might find interesting.
