Such a post reveals your ignorance. The so-called "Witch doctors" - ie, midwives and traditional healers, used the natural world for various medicines as best they could.
In ACTUAL fact, the most efficacious medicines in the modern toolbox were copies or rediscoveries of their wisdoms - fx, easily the most harmless painkiller, aspirin, was a traditional painkiller from willow bark.
Witches in pre-barbaric culture, were very highly respected members of their communities, usually with generations of knowledge stored from decades of learning and practice - which is PRECISELY why the barbarian patriarchal and wannabe-ignorant Christians spent so much time demonising them.
Literally, there is no one in HISTORY who can be compared to the "Absolutely fucking insane Psychiatrists", even the Mengele crowd had a rudimentary scientific basis under their inhuman and amoral experiments.
It will be "psychiatrists" who will be vilified in future cultures as the ones to compare to - not "Witch-doctors".
By the by Daniel, if you want an extremely funny and much less outraged view regarding the matter, look up the old "Chelmsford 1 2 3" comedy show, and how the 'Druid Apothecary' is portrayed. Quite how Australia managed to sneak its style of humour into the UK without being stopped at the border is still being looked into.
Pray tell which doctors are you good stack poster referring to? The General Practitioner/Primary Care Doctor? High time those script chimps grow a pair and speak out. Referring the “heart sink”, the all too hard “2:30” patient to a psickiatrist is akin to greasing the wheels of the “genetically cursed” to a hell realm. To see their patients return to them in such poor physical mental health; over weight, erectile dysfunctional, zonked out, unable to think, participate in the work force, abnormally high liver function tests (the list is not exhausted) and not speak out beggars belief. Do no harm shysters, that means to the patient not to your own old school tie fraternity. Spineless grubs with new regs rolling out looks like those primates are able to sign scripts for stimulate medication for children too now.
The idea that to be biological, categories must map onto distinct causes with no crossover is patently untrue. Happens just as rarely in physical medicine as psychiatry. Never heard of the patient with obesity, sleep apnoea, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, throw in CKD in a few years time....??? These are classic "syndromes" that rarely travel singularly... How many patients with T2DM "just" have diabetes??? Even more unlikely than that your patient with MDD "just" has depression. Comorbidity is not a feature of psychiatry that is absent in physical medicine. It's disappointing when you don't have integrity and make an argument in the absence of reality.
To my knowledge, it was cobbled together in about 1943 because psychiatry was such a mess, they had to do something to try to standardise it. For some background on CIA and psychiatry, read the story of Dr Donald Ewen Cameron in Montreal.
RANZCP, RANZID - Ex Veritate Salus, excellent excrement. Good money in misery. More detailed response to retired Dr Niall McLaren pending. Thank you for your weekly posts.
The underlying problem can be put succinctly: to talk of mental disorders implies there is something wrong with the brain. This is purely speculative and arises because of failure to appreciate that mental symptoms (depression, anxiety, delusions, etc.) – even if extreme – don’t rise in a vacuum but are a reaction to life events.
I was upset to learn from watching the Lycanthropy video that it was not a manual to retire on a pension by claiming to be a wolf. Clearly a case of false advertising by Niall!
Plus, the interactions go back LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG before "2000 bloody years ago". Perhaps into the many 100s of thousands of years. But hey ho. It's a bloke pretending to be a cat - how much can you even hope for??.
Is there a Big Harma pill yet for Furries? If not, perhaps I should try to be the trailblazer for that genius retirement idea...
On another topic, do you think that a person can develop schizophrenia purely because they are very brilliant and therefore struggle to cope in society?
And if so, would that qualify as a biological cause of mental illness?
Good question. Yes, people who use their intellect to try to solve hugely complex problems in their heads can drift into a state of detachment that eventually attracts the label of schizophrenia. My experience of them is that this is driven by self-involvement, they like their ideas and would rather focus on them than with the course work they're supposed to be studying.
"Schizophrenia" isn't a real diagnosis, Julian. There's no such thing. It's a term that a bunch of quacks puked up for a variety of ailments they had no handle on explaining at the time.
Several of the ailments listed under the same diagnosis are literally direct opposite psychological traits that have nothing to do with each other.
Excellent presentation of the six DSM categories and their formation over the decades.
I would like to say, though, that there is a role for psychologists which is independent of psychiatrists, namely, the very real idea of the sociopath (or psychopath) in our midst.
The best that psychiatrists have come up with is antisocial personality which depends a lot on people in prisons, whereas the sociopath is identified by psychologists and walks amongst us.
Absolutely right. The former diagnosis of "psychopath" was dropped in favour of "sociopath" which included convictions just because so many of the American elite (and all other elites, of course) and their offspring met the former diagnosis. Essentially, you can't get ahead in the rat race without a solid dose of psychopathy to help you climb over people and club them from behind.
I have so much to say, but I don't want to offended all the Witch Doctors out there.
Witch Doctors didn't know they were Witch Doctors....
Insanity is trying the same thing twice and expecting a new result, psychiatrists are absolutely fucking insane.
I don't think many witch doctors read this file. Unfortunately, they could learn something.

So it was originally an Army medical manual they pushed on the rest of us?
CIA was already operational in 1952 and I'd bet this DSM is another societal control mechanism.
