COULD PSYCHIATRY FOR ONCE IN ITS EXISTANCE DO SOMETHING USEFUL ?

The deep lust for power by human beings is so poorly understood by nearly everyone that by the time the average person identifies the problem it is usually much too late to do anything about it. Education alone won't bring an end to the problem however the human race would benefit enormously if a minuscule percentage of mental health professionals such as Dr McLaren were paid to research a deeper understanding of the problem and develop courses for ordinary citizens and others that could benefit.

Maybe we should rank human conditions that cause problems by the numbers of deaths they cause because that is a reasonably objective way of measuring severe impact. If this idea gained traction Psychiatry might even try and fix the worst problems first. At the moment Psychiatry attempts to fix things that aren't even problems with devastating results.

I agree with Niall and with Michael. The most significant factors in poor mental health outcomes are child abuse and early exposure to violence. God help the children of Gaza. Psychiatry's preoccupation with brain disorders and psychotropic medication does not help address these problems at the domestic level, so is not likely to have answers to these global and existential issues.
